Why Extensions Aren't A Bad Thing

Most people think filing a tax extension means you’re falling behind or scrambling to pull things together—but that’s far from the truth. In fact, extensions can be a smart, proactive decision when used correctly.

At Basso & Guida, we often recommend extensions not as a last resort, but as a tool for better accuracy and financial control.

When Does a Tax Extension Make Sense?

You might want to consider filing an extension if:

  • You’re waiting on key documents, like K-1s, 1099s, or corrected W-2s
  • You had a major life event, like a move, marriage, or business launch
  • You’re a business owner still finalizing your books
  • You want more time to assess complex deductions or tax-saving strategies

Filing an extension gives you until October 15 to submit your return. It doesn’t give you more time to pay—estimated taxes are still due by April 15, but it does give you breathing room to ensure your return is accurate and complete.

Benefits of Filing a Tax Extension

  • Reduces the risk of errors or omissions
  • Allows time to gather all documents and explore tax-saving options
  • Avoids the pressure of rushing a return

If you’re unsure whether to file now or extend, we’ll walk you through the pros and cons. Our goal is to make sure you’re not overpaying or under-prepared.

Don’t Let “Extension Shame” Keep You from a Smart Choice

Filing an extension isn’t a red flag, it’s a reflection of responsible tax planning. In fact, some of our most financially successful clients file extensions every year to give themselves time to do it right.
